In the middle of November, a Christmas Story Christmas, a sequel to the Christmas classic A Christmas Story, was released on HBO Max. A Christmas Story Christmas follows a now adult Ralphie as he journeys back home due to the loss of his father. To cope with the loss, he attempts to deliver the perfect family Christmas that his father was always so good at.

I was pleasantly surprised by how good this movie was. Normally these types of movies, a sequel to a 40-year-old Christmas movie, are very bad. However, this movie was able to recapture the magic of the original film and create a good story while not just being a rehash of the original. This film is mainly a love letter to the original film as it pays homage and references many elements of the original while still building on them. I also enjoyed the change in perspective from the original to this film. The original movie is all about the joy of Christmas through the eyes of Ralphie as a kid and trying to get the perfect gift. Whereas, this film is all about Ralphie as an adult trying to let his kids experience the joys of Christmas and making sure they receive the perfect gift. It is a great way to connect with viewers who grew up with Ralphie and can see the change in how they view Christmas. The film also has some very funny moments that made me laugh out loud multiple times. This film also manages to be very heartwarming and shows the magic of Christmas and the importance of family. Finally, I thought it was cool how they brought back most of the original cast for this film, especially since many of them don't really act anymore and returned purely for this film. It was just an extra touch that made the film feel even more genuine.

There aren't a lot of issues I have with this film. The only things I have are that the humor doesn't always land in the way they were going and that there aren't really any new iconic moments in this film like there are in the previous. Other than that, it is a very fun movie that achieves exactly what it was going for.

Overall, this is a great sequel and tribute to the original film that was very heartwarming and funny and is just a great way to follow up such an iconic Christmas movie.

Score: 8/10 Grade: B+ Recommendation: Check it out
