Coming out last weekend, Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers was released on Disney+ as a sequel/reboot to the original 90's TV show. Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers follows TV stars, Chip and Dale, as they attempt to navigate life after their separation when their show was canceled. When an old friend gets kidnapped, Chip and Dale must reunite to figure to find him and figure out who is behind the kidnappings.
This movie was a lot better than it had any right to be. When I first saw the trailer, I thought it would be like the newest Space Jam movie, where the studio tries to showcase all of their franchises by disguising it as a movie. That was not the case here, as the movie had a solid plot and good characters and was quite funny. It is just a nice little detective story that gets to have some fun throwing Disney references in. I thought the world-building was also a lot of fun as well with the basic idea being that all the cartoon characters you see in movies are living in the real world as actors. With that idea, the movie gets to go all-in with cameos of other Disney characters and throw in a lot of references to other shows and movies. I think the movie balances the cameos and references very well, while not overstuffing the movie but having just enough that audiences can enjoy. The movie is also really self-aware in its humor. While not fully aware that they are in a movie, characters will make a lot of self-aware jokes such as how something that is happening is such a movie cliché. Finally, the movie is just really funny with a lot of its jokes being self-aware jokes or others being references and cameos or just making fun of other studios. I'm really happy that Disney decided to make something like this and felt that they just went for the fun and campy and pulled it off.
The only hang-up I have with this movie is the voices they decided to go with for Chip and Dale. I just thought it was really weird that they had normal voices instead of their high-pitched chipmunk voices. I just thought it was an odd choice to go and at times distracted me from the events of the movie.
Overall, this movie was a great streaming B movie that had a solid plot and great humor that also went for it with the silliness and camp.
Grade: B Score:7/10 Recommendation: Go stream it
