This weekend, Crime 101, a new heist crime thriller, releases in theaters. Crime 101 stars Chris Hemsworth as a highly skilled thief who robs high-profile jewelers along the 101 highway. I was very interested in this movie, given its impressive cast and intriguing premise.
I thought this was a very cool crime thriller. This movie is essentially an intertwining story between these three main characters and does a great job of giving each character a proper amount of screentime. The cast here is absolutely stacked with Marvel stars. There is Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Mark Ruffalo (Hulk), Halle Berry (Storm), and Barry Keoghan (Druig). It is fun to see them all in something outside of superhero stuff. Chris Hemsworth is great as this very reserved, just very precise criminal. It is very different than the roles he normally does. It is also super weird to see him with an American accent. I also like how the movie has this contract between Davis (Chris Hemsworth) and Ormon (Barry Keoghan) where Davis is very calm, reserved, precise, and doesn't like to hurt people, while Ormon is crazy, chaotic, and doesn't care who he hurts, and puts them going after the same job. I also like the character arc that Halle Berry's character goes through with her career crisis and how that drives her briefly down a darker path. The movie does a great job of building up all of these different character struggles, arcs, and relationships, and pays them off in a finale that brings them all together. In general, the movie does a great job of bringing high anxiety and thrills from beginning to end. There is a pretty much nonstop feeling of tension for the entire movie, which the music helps with a lot. You also get this feeling of dread as you know that all of these goals and relationships can't go well for everyone. There were also a few pretty cool action sequences. The chase between the car and the motorbike was very cool.
The only disappointment I had was that the movie was lighter on action than I was hoping. There is a good chunk in the middle of the movie that is quite slow and is all about building these characters . It is definitely not a crime action movie.
Overall, I thought that this was a very good crime thriller that does a great job of building the stories of these characters and combining them all together in the finale.
Score: 8/10 Grade: B+ Recommendation: Check it out
