This Tuesday, the season finale of Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 will be released on Disney+. Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 continues the story of Matt Murdock as he works to take down Wilson Fisk's empire as the Mayor of New York City. I had some issues with season 1 until they did a creative overhaul towards the end of the season. With season 2 sharing the same creative team as season 1, I was very excited to see how it would turn out.
I thought that this season did a reasonably good job of carrying the momentum from the end of season 1. Much like Season 1 and the original Daredevil show, there is a dark, gritty tone that helps keep things street and separate from the rest of the MCU. I appreciate that this show doesn't lighten up Daredevil to match the rest of the MCU. I like the whole plot line of Matt and Karen forming a bit of a resistance against Fisk and trying to end his tyrany as mayor as well as saving people from his task force. As always, I think Vincent D'Onofrio is fantastic as Wilson Fisk. He carries such a presence in the role and creates a character that is intimidating yet complex. I like how the show gives him a ton of screen time so the audience can understand his motives while also experiencing some of his pain. The show almost makes him sympathetic, but not enough to justify what he does. The show also gives Daredevil some good moments. There are several solid action sequences in which he takes out bad guys. The show also gives Daredevil a solid arc as he learns to move beyond his rage over Foggy's death and not stoop to Kingpin's level. I also like how the show gradually brings in more members of The Defenders, with Jessica Jones making an appearance in a couple of episodes. The show also delivers an intense ending with lots of twists and turns, closing out the story for this season while leaving open the possibility of a third season.
While I was very happy with this show, there were a few aspects that made it so the show didn't quite meet my expectations. I thought that Jessica Jones was a bit underutilized. The trailer made her out to be more of a supporting character, but she ended up only bringing some teaser moments in a few scenes. She has an action scene here or there, but is never present much in a single episode. I also wish that the show had a bit more action in it. It feels more like a slow burn at times, and gets bogged down with the whole story with Buck, BB, and Daniel that never really ties into the main story.
Overall, this is still one of the best shows in the MCU and one that I am excited to see a third season of. However, it never does reach those highs of the original show.
Score: 8/10 Grade: B+ Recommendation: Check it out
