Coming out at the end of April, Everything Everywhere All At Once is a new movie that attempts to tackle the concept of the multiverse. Everything Everywhere All At Once follows Chinese immigrant Evelyn Wang as a struggling mother, wife, and business owner. She is soon contacted by a version of her husband from another dimension and is swept off into an insane adventure across the multiverse where she must discover her potential and attempt to save the world.
This movie is a fresh break in an industry that is stuffed full of reboots, sequels, and spinoffs. It was really fun to see a movie that embraces the concept of a multiverse without being tied to a preexisting franchise. The story was wild, crazy, and was such a breath of fresh air to actually experience an original story. The movie does a great job in handling the multiverse, absolutely embracing the madness that comes with it. It introduces us to over a dozen different universes and actually allows them to play a part in the story. The movie can illustrate the concept of how one small change can create a wide array of alternate universes while also embracing the most random of universes such as one where everyone has hot dogs for figures. Overall, this movie embraces the multiverse at the level that I wished Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness would have. While Doctor Strange dipped a toe into the potential of the multiverse, Everything Everywhere All At Once does a full-on cannonball into it. While the movie does focus on the multiverse it also has a great deal of grounded martial arts action. The action scenes are a lot of fun to watch and really cool to see with a lot of CGI getting in the way. Along the same lines, the movie has a lot of practical effects, and while there is some CGI, the movie doesn't overutilize it. While the movie's premise is wild and crazy, at its core it is about a broken person and her relationships. Evelyn also has quite the character growth starting as an overwhelmed miserable person and by the end learning how to embrace and enjoy life. Joy is also an excellent character. She is very complex and conflicted and it makes the audience understand her struggles. The relationships established in the film are also handled really well, each one resolved perfectly and allowing Evelyn to learn and grow from each of them. Finally, the movie has some really strong emotional moments between Evelyn and her family that really show the growth of all of the characters.
The only issue I really had with the movie is that it felt a bit too long. The second half felt a bit too complicated and dragged just a hair. If the second half would have been tightened up by about 10 minutes I feel it would have made for a much better movie.
Overall, the movie has a great story with strong characters that handles the multiverse very well. It is a nice original story that embraces the weird and wacky while also still providing a lot of good character growth and emotion.
Grade: A Score: 9/10 Recommendation: Go check it out

Finally watched this movie and am still trying to process it all. It won a lot of awards, after all, and it’s not like any other movie I can think of. Great characters for sure, and I like the idea of thinking about the path our different choices might have taken us.
