This week, the season finale of Fallout Season 2 released on Amazon Prime Video. Fallout Season 2 continues the story of Lucy MacLean as she journeys across the wasteland with The Ghoul to find her dad. I enjoyed the first season quite a bit, so I was looking forward to seeing the direction that season 2 would go. I still haven't played any of the games, so I still won't be able to speak to the accuracy of the show.
I had quite a bit of fun with this season. Much of the stuff that I liked about the last season is in this season as well. We still get the dark humor and cool wasteland action sequences. I also like the contrast between life in the vault and life in the wasteland. Though in this season, we do get more of the vault dwellers going through hardship. This season also brings some new aspects that are also fun. We get to see the dynamic between Lucy and The Ghoul as they journey across the wasteland together. It is fun to see Lucy's optimism go against the Ghouls' cynicism. However, we also see the characters impacting each other. Lucy becomes less innocent, and we get to see her slowly be corrupted by the world while still hanging on to her optimism. The Ghoul becomes more sympathetic and chooses to help people when he could otherwise walk away. The show also features some fun guest stars such as Macaulay Culkin and Kumail Nanjiani. I also liked how this season builds out the world a bit more, as it expands on the role of Vault-Tec as well as introduces groups like The Legion and The New California Republic, and places like New Vegas.
However, I did like this show quite a bit less than the first season. The story for this season just didn't work as well. It felt more like an in-between season that spent all of its time introducing threats and getting people where they need to be for a superior third season. I also didn't like how Maximus got sidelined. I would have liked to see more of him in the Brotherhood. Instead, we got filler plots like the drama with the children of incest snack club. I just wish there was more to the story this season and less of the filler stuff.
Overall, this was another fun season of Fallout. However, I wish the story had had more of a purpose with less fluff in the middle.
Score: 7.5/10 Grade: B Recommendation: Check it out
