This weekend, Hit Man, the newest film from Richard Linklater, was released on Netflix. Hit Man follows philosophy professor Gary Johnson as he moonlights as a fake hitman for the police however things soon begin to go awry when Gary starts to fall for one of the suspects. I heard many good things about this movie and have enjoyed the last few films Glen Powel has been in so I was very interested to see how this one would turn out.
In general, this was a fun top-notch movie. I thought the story was interesting and thought it was so cool that it was based on a real person. The movie does a great job of balancing the comedy with the romance. I wouldn't classify this as a rom-com but the movie definitely has strong elements of both romance and comedy. The movie also absolutely nails the tone. It isn't too dark or serious but also isn't super goofy or campy. The tone is just light enough that it can appeal to a broad audience while still being a ton of fun. The writing in this film is also top-notch. There is dialogue written early in the film that lingers throughout the movie and has a great payoff by the end. The character growth of Gary Johnson is also very well done as we get to see him slowly transform his personality throughout the movie. The shining star of this movie is Glen Powel in the lead. He does such a great job in his performance as he is also to transform into all of these different characters. This movie definitely shows that he is a fantastic actor. The movie also moves at a very brisk pace never overstaying its welcome in any moment. It tells a very streamlined story with no subplots or underlying messages. Finally, I like how the movie manages to keep you on your toes from beginning to end. Several unexpected twists and turns made for a great ending to the film.
There really aren't any negatives I have about this movie. The trailer was a bit misrepresentative of the film so if you go in expecting what the trailer shows you may be a bit disappointed.
Overall, this is a great film and a solid choice for a date night. Both Sarah and I enjoyed it and would definitely watch it again.
Score: 9/10 Grade: A Recommendation: Check this film out
