This weekend, Jurassic World: Rebirth, the newest film in the Jurassic Park franchise, released in theaters. Jurassic World: Reborn follows a team on an expedition to extract DNA from three dinosaurs to be used in a groundbreaking medical breakthrough. The last few Jurassic films have been entertaining, but they contain a lot of nonsense, and I was expecting more of the same. The only thing giving me higher hopes was the director, Gareth Edwards, who has made Rogue One and Godzilla.
I would classify this movie as a perfectly ok Jurassic film. It is pretty much a middle ground film in the franchise. On the positive end, this film does go back to capturing the essence and awe that the franchise has always been about. It goes back to the classic premise of journeying to a dinosaur-infested island. I like that this story goes back to the basics and is a very simplistic story. Unlike some of the other Jurassic World films that get into things like human cloning, locusts, and corporate espionage, this movie is solely focused on journeying to the island, retrieving DNA, and escaping. There is no gobbly gook or other nonsense to complicate things. I thought the human characters were fine enough. They are about at the same level as those of the other Jurassic World films, one-dimensional but having entertaining personalities. I also thought that the dinosaurs looked good. With lots of other franchises having CGI that seems to be getting worse, it's nice to see Jurassic World maintaining its quality.
While this movie doesn't have any glaring errors or huge stupid moments, I still wouldn’t call this a great film. As I said before, the characters are all pretty one-dimensional, with nothing there to get you invested in them. I thought that the boating family didn’t have any purpose in the film. They don’t add anything to the film and seem to only be there so that our characters can be split into two groups on the island. I also wasn’t a huge fan of the idea of mutant dinosaurs. It didn’t upset me much, but I feel like using actual dinosaur species would have had the same effect. Finally, it does take a bit to get going; it is almost an hour before the movie reaches the dinosaur island.
Overall, while the movie doesn’t do anything terrible, it still doesn’t reach the levels of the original film or even Jurassic World. However, I was still entertained and think this is one of the better films in the franchise. It’s not going to win people over who didn’t like the other films, but it will bring enjoyment to those who want some dinosaur action.
Score: 7/10 Grade: B Recommendation: Check it out if you like the other films
