With March at an end, it is time to share my thoughts and ranking on the March new releases that I saw. March was a bit busier for releases, with three movies that I wanted to see coming out when I was on vacation, so I had to catch up when I got home. I managed to see five new movies this month. This month didn't have any top-tier movies but there were quite a few of B level mid-tier movies that I saw. With all that said, here are my thoughts and ranking of the five new releases I saw.
5. Snow White

Snow White was one of the worst movies I saw this year. While it isn't as bad as the internet would imply (2.3/10 on IMDB) it is still not a good movie. Its one redeeming quality is Rachel Zeigler as Snow White. While a lot of people are not a fan of her because of some comments she made about the film, she is still a very good performer and a great singer. She plays the role of Snow White with such sincerity and adds a sense of showmanship from her musical theater days to the musical aspects of the movie. Aside from that, I'm not sure the movie had much of a chance of success. It is tonally all over the place, going from Whistle While You Work to a guy getting shot in the shoulder with an arrow. The movie also kind of loses the essence of Snow White with no prince and almost omits the dwarves from the movie. Disney tried to course correct but it still feels so hollow and forced. They either needed to go all in with the modern take on Snow White and shoot for today's generation or go all in with a remake of the original and please the fans of the original not put in half an effort of both and please no one. Overall, this was a very misguided attempt at a remake of a classic film that missed the original purpose of the movie.
Score: 5/10 Grade: C
4. A Working Man

A Working Man is a new Jason Statham action thriller. This movie is similar enough to The Beekeeper but nowhere near as fun. Of course, this isn't a high-quality film. There is a lot of nonsense and poor writing that goes on. But in the end, you are here to watch Jason Statham beat up on human traffickers and that is what the movie delivers. The movie delivers a lot of solid over-the-top action sequences. There is just something satisfying about watching terrible people such as human traffickers getting beat up. What makes this movie not as good as The Beekeeper is that it takes itself a bit too seriously. The Beekeeper embraces the nonsense while A Working Man tries to keep things grounded. You can also tell that this movie tries to simplify too many ideas and fit them into a simple action movie. This movie is based on a book and you can tell that there are more complex ideas in the book that the movie tries to acknowledge but still brush past. In the end, this movie is a fun enough action movie that achieves what it is going for but takes itself a bit too seriously at times.
Score: 6.5/10 Grade: B-
3. Novocaine

Novocaine was a fun mid-level action movie from this month. The movie follows Nathan Caine, a man who has a nerve condition where he cannot feel pain, as he goes on an unexpected mission across the city to rescue a girl he has feelings for. Jack Quaid stars as the titular character. I had a lot of fun with this movie. It has an interesting premise and doesn't take itself too seriously. The action scenes are all very entertaining as well as contain a lot of moments that make you cringe because of how painful they look. Jack Quaid is such a likable lead character and it was cool to see him get the spotlight in the film after being more limited in The Boys or Scream 5. There are plenty of action sequences to keep you entertained as well as a romance that is easy to get invested in. There was also a pretty solid plot twist that I wasn't expecting in a movie like this. In the end, Novocaine isn't going for the biggest action movie of the year. It isn't trying to be a highly choreographed stunt show. It is just trying to be a small-scale B movie with some solid laughs and mid-level practical action. The characters aren't the most well-written in the world and the villains are one-dimensional and forgettable but it is an entertaining film nonetheless and better than many of the other B-level action movies I have seen recently.
Score: 7/10 Grade: B
2. Black Bag

Black Bag is a small spy thriller from Steven Soderbergh, director of Oceans 11 and Magic Mike. The movie stars Michael Fassbender and Cate Blanchet and follows a British intelligence officer who is tasked with going through a list of potential traitors, one of whom is his wife. Black Bag was an effective detective spy thriller. It is one-part spy movie with the characters using surveillance technology to gain information and then ends much like a whodunit mystery movie with how it reveals who the traitor is. I thought the movie does a very good job of blending these two genres. You feel the tension building throughout the film as Michael Fassbender works to uncover new information and then achieves an effective payoff in the final moments of the movie. There isn't as much action as the trailers would imply but the thrillers and intrigue are ever present throughout the film. The biggest issue with Black Bag is that the trailers are a bit misleading. The trailers imply that this is a movie about a husband hunting down his wife when she is accused of being a traitor but that is not the case at all and I feel like what the trailers showed would have been a better movie than what we got. Overall, this was a pretty interesting spy thriller that even with a misleading trailer still manages to tell a captivating story.
Score: 7.5/10 Grade: B
1. Mickey 17

Mickey 17 was one of my most anticipated movies of the year and an original Sci-Fi story. This movie is full of witty comedy and political and social commentary. Mickey 17 also delivers quite a bit of humor. It isn't laugh-out-loud funny but is a more subtle dry kind of humor. Robert Pattinson is great in the lead role. He plays such a different character than anything he has done before which shows his range as an actor. I also like how he can play two different versions of the same character and give them each a different personality and convey a different outlook on life. Mark Ruffalo is also great as this bumbling dictator-like political figure. While this is at the top of the list, the score of this movie shows how middle-ground of a month this was for movies. I did have some fairly large issues with this movie. There were a bit too many ideas and plot points going around. A lot of ideas are either established early on and not really mentioned until the end or just kind of thrown in the middle and then pushed aside. In the end, while I had some issues with the film, I still thought it was a very fun movie and a refreshing break from the franchise-heavy Sci-Fi genre.
