At the beginning of July, Minions: The Rise of Gru was released in theaters. Minions: The Rise of Gru follows the minions as they begin working for Gru to assist in his quest to become the greatest supervillain ever.
As always, the Despicable Me movies are a lot of fun. This one was really funny, with jokes being thrown around throughout the movie. The minions always make me laugh with the slapstick humor that they are so good at. There is enough humor in the film to make both kids and parents laugh. The story itself was pretty interesting partially being an origin story for Gru. The story is a simple and quick movie making it never drag a long or get boring. I also enjoyed how the story was focused on Gru instead of just the minions. Where the first minions film struggled was the fact that it was completely focused on the minions who are not meant to be main characters as they do not grow or change. With this movie, the story was shifted more toward Gru and his origin, allowing the movie to include a character that can grow and change. While he is not quite the main character in the story, having him be more of the focus definitely makes the movie better.
However, what keeps this movie back is the same as with the first movie which is that the main characters are the minions. The minions are meant to be spice characters. Having them sprinkled throughout a movie makes it better but having them be the main focus hurts it. This is because the minions were never meant to be the main character as they are not strong enough to carry a story as the lead. The minions are meant to be consistent and supply comic relief, not to lead a story and be the heroes. Had this been a movie completely about Grus origin story with the minions on the side as compared to a minions story with Gru on the side, I think it would've been much better.
Score: 7/10 Grade: B Recommendation: Check it out
