Back in February, Moonfall, Ronald Emmerich's newest disaster movie, was released in theaters. When a mysterious force causes the moon to go on a collision course towards earth, disgraced astronaut Brian along with NASA deputy director Jocinda and Megastructure theorist KC must come up with a plan to get the moon back into orbit and save all life on Earth.
Moonfall is not a good movie, yet it is a very entertaining and watchable movie. I went in expecting a fun stupid disaster movie with a ridiculous premise of the moon crashing into the Earth which is exactly what I got. Roland Emmerich is known for directing this kind of movie and goes all-in with the ridiculous and stupidness of it. This movie leans into his usual bag tricks including a big disaster that overshadows any sort of coherent or logical plot, an excess amount of 1-dimensional characters who occasionally say a funny one-liner but in the end, won't be memorable at all and finally, multiple shots of famous cities and landmarks being destroyed. I could go in and nitpick this movie to death with the lack of logic and too many subplots and characters but that is what always comes with these types of movies and is what is fun about watching them. It is a movie about the moon crashing into the earth, you will get exactly what you pay for.
The first half reminds me a lot of Armageddon except with less memorable characters. However, it significantly differs from Armageddon in the third act when it leans hard into its big twist that is so stupid and ridiculous that you cannot help but laugh. The audience may be laughing at the movie instead of with the movie but Moonfall still manages to entertain while never being boring. This movie is an example of what I call junk food movies. It is not good nor a high-quality film but is enjoyable and easy to consume. If you think too hard about it or read too much into it, it will fall apart quickly. Personally, I enjoy these types of movies and their stupidness.
Overall, Moonfall manages to be another stupid disaster movie where you can turn your brain off and watch the moon and the cities go boom.
Grade: C Score: 5/10
Recommendation: If you like stupid disaster movies, watch this. If you don't, go ahead and skip it.
