This weekend, Predator: Killer of Killers, the newest film in the Predator franchise, was quietly released on Hulu. Predator: Killer of Killers is an anthology film that follows three warriors from different periods of history as they face off against the alien Predators. I had no idea this was coming out until about a month ago but am always up for a good Predator film. This movie was directed by the director of Prey, so I had high hopes.
In general, this was a pretty decent Predator movie. I think the Predator franchise lends itself well to exploring different eras and featuring various warriors fighting against the aliens. It is interesting to see the Predator's evolution over time with more primitive weapons when fighting against the Vikings and ninjas and more advanced weapons when fighting against the WWII pilot. I also liked how each era had its own fighting style and strategy for facing the Predator. The movie delivers a lot of good Predator action making for a lot of vivid sequences that wouldn't quite work in live action. I like how the movie moves at an efficient pace as it clocks in at under 90 minutes. It gets through each story very quickly leaving no room for a lull. While they are three different stories, Predator: Killer of Killers still manages to pull them together in the end for a big finale. It reminds me a bit of What If...? with its seemingly separate stories that combine to fight a common enemy. I also thought the animation style looked really good. It also reminded me quite a bit of What If...? with its more drawing-like animation instead of feeling computer generated.
The biggest hang-up I have is that it feels more like a TV show than a movie. There are 4 very clear sections in the movie that could just as easily have been 4 TV episodes instead of an 80-minute movie. I think flow-wise, it would have worked a lot better as a 4 episode mini-series.
Overall, I thought this was a solid addition to the Predator franchise but with how the movie was structured felt that it could have worked much better as a TV show.
Score: 7.5/10 Grade: B Recommendation: Check it out
