This weekend, Rebel Moon - Part 2: The Scargiver, the newest film from Zack Snyder released on Netflix. This movie follows Kora and her band of warriors as they return to Kora's home to defend the people against the Motherworld. I was not impressed with Part 1 but remained optimistic that Part 2 would be an improvement as I really like Zack Snyder and Sci-Fi stories.

Unfortunately, just like the first film, this movie was very disappointing. I really wanted to like this movie but it just didn't deliver anything to redeem itself. While it does look really good from a style perspective and has some cool big action sequences and Zack Snyder's signature slo-mo, the movie itself is just a big disappointment. Starting off, while it says it is an original Sci-Fi story, this movie is extremely derivative and is basically the second half of The Magnificent Seven but with a Star Wars skin on it. The characters are also extremely poorly written with no memorable character traits and no depth or growth to them. Some of the characters die but you feel nothing towards them as the movie spends no time establishing them. There are also several characters that serve virtually no purpose to the story. I don't even know why Anthony Hopkins is apart of this movie. I also felt that the movie didn't have much of a plot to it. It feels like the second half of a story. However, even this doesn't work as the story is essentially resolved in the first film. This is a prime example of a film that is all style but no substance. It looks decent and has some solid action sequences but there isn't much of any plot or memorable characters. The movie just feels like it has no spark to it or anything that makes it stand out on its own. The movie also felt like it only had about an hour's worth of material that somehow got stretched into two hours.

In the end, while I really wanted to like this film, it lacks any sort of originality or substance to make it a compelling and good story. Zack Snyder said that he presented this movie to Disney as a new Star Wars film but they rejected it and I am beginning to understand why.

Score: 4/10 Grade: D Recommendation: Skip it
