This weekend, Renfield, a new horror comedy with Nicholas Cage as Dracula releases in theaters. Renfield follows the servant of Dracula, R.M. Renfield as he lives in modern America and supplies Dracula with all of his needs. However, Renfield soon begins to yearn for a life without Dracula and begins to explore life focusing on his own needs. I was sold on this movie when it was announced that Nicholas Cage was playing Dracula and was interested in how goofy this movie would be.
Right off the bat, easily the best thing about this movie is Nicholas Cage as Dracula. Nicholas Cage goes so over the top with this role and is just so much fun to watch. You can really tell that he is having a lot of fun in this movie. Aside from Nicholas Cage, the rest of the movie is quite funny as well. There are so many moments that had my whole theater laughing. The violence and action sequences are also really well done. It was really fun to see Renfield do all of these flips, cut off people's limbs, and just rip people in half.
Finally, I thought the whole therapy group addressing Renfield's relationship with Dracula was really funny and clever. Overall, this movie delivered mostly what I expected. It was fun. It was goofy and was a fun enough way to spend 90 minutes.
However, the movie I sit on this movie, the more my enjoyment of it decreases. Overall, I thought the movie was awfully generic. There wasn't really anything to make it stand out. The jokes weren't as funny as they should have been and the plot essentially turns the movie into a typical cop vs crime lord movie. I also felt like Awkwafina was wasted in this movie. Normally, she plays very loud funny characters. However, in this movie, she plays a very neutered version of herself with not much memorable about her character. I also felt that the most interesting parts of the movie were shown in the trailer, not really leaving much new stuff to see in the movie itself.
Overall, this movie was fun and kept me entertained for 90 minutes but it really isn't anything memorable. It is the type of movie that you won't be bored watching but won't remember the day after you go see it.
Score: 6.5/10 Grade: B- Recommendation: Wait and stream this one
R Rating Disclaimer: This movie is rated R for language and violence. There are quite a lot of F-bombs and graphic violence in this movie. If either of those things bother you, you may want to sit this one out.
