This weekend, Scream VI, the newest addition to the Scream franchise, was released in theaters. Scream is my favorite horror franchise and I have been a big fan of the meta-commentary these films provide. I also really like the new characters in the past two films and was really interested in the direction they were going to take in this story.
This was a very good movie and one of my favorites in the franchise. I liked the new direction that the story was taken. It allows the franchise and characters to distance themselves from Woodsboro and do their own thing. I also liked how to movie plays homage to the other films, by tying all of the events together and connecting them to the current characters. As typical of these movies, the meta-commentary is a lot of fun. This movie takes on the topic of franchises and all the rules that go with them which was a fresh direction to go with the series. The movie also does a great job of delivering some solid Ghostface action. This film has a lot of gnarly kills and is definitely one of the most violent in the franchise. The big twist reveal that this movie has was also really great. The reveal of who the killer is makes sense with the rest of the story without feeling too meta or over the top like previous killers have. Aside from the original film, this movie probably has my favorite villain reveal. The movie also does a great job of giving us a natural next step for both Sam and Tara. They both are struggling with what happened in the previous film, and this film does a great job of showing the impact on their characters both in their mindsets and how they have to live their lives. Finally, I really enjoyed the character dynamic between all of the main and side characters. The "core four" as Chad calls them have great chemistry together and get a lot of fun moments. Kirby's return was also a lot of fun as she also has some great moments with the rest of the characters.
There were only a couple of minor issues I had with this film. The first is that some of the characters seemed way too invincible. A character would get stabbed 20 times or get shot 3-4 times but still somehow manage to keep crawling or running as if the injury didn't matter. It really took me out of the movie at times, especially since in previous movies, all it took was one shot and they were out. The other issue was that the movie didn't really use NYC to its full potential. There aren't any sequences that show that they are in NYC so the movie could've really been set anywhere. There is no reason for it to take place in the city other than for the sake of having a new location.
Overall, this is a fantastic addition to the franchise as it manages to keep this franchise fresh while still being willing to connect to the original films. This is probably going to be one of my favorite horror movies going forward.
Score: 8.5/10 Grade: A- Recommendation: A must-see for horror or Scream fans
R Rating Disclaimer: This movie is rated R for language and graphic violence. If either of those things bother you, then this is not the movie for you.
