This weekend, The Devil Wears Prada 2 released in theaters. The Devil Wears Prada 2 continues the story of Andy Sachs as she once again finds herself working with Miranda Priestly at Runway. Believe it or not, I am not the target audience for this movie, but Sarah was very excited about it.
As I said before, this movie is not meant for me, but as far as films about the fashion world go, it wasn’t terrible. I thought the movie did a good job of showing these characters in a new stage of their lives. We see Andy as an actual journalist, Emily separating herself from the runaways, and Miranda trying to move up in her career. The movie also does a good job of showing the adaptation to the times. Physical magazines aren’t as popular today, and this movie shows Miranda and Runway having to adapt to the digital age and use social media. We also see Andy having to adapt her content to fit a generation that scrolls without reading full articles. The movie also has Miranda having to learn to work in a more PC culture. Some of the things she did in the original movie would not fly today, and this movie addresses that. This movie also does a good job of expanding relationships with characters. There is more of a dynamic between Andy and Miranda as Andy has grown more confident, which forces Miranda to see her as an actual coworker. We also see an expansion of the relationship between Nigel and Andy as the two become friends. Finally, I found this movie to be surprisingly funny at times. There were several moments that made me laugh out loud. In that respect, I think it improves on the original.
As I said, this movie is not my thing, and I am not going to find myself rewatching it unless Sarah wants to watch it. Aside from that, I did have a few issues with the film. I felt the new man for Andy was a bit unnecessary. It didn’t add anything to the overall story other than just padding the run time. It isn’t really impacted by her job like her relationship in the first film is. I also thought that Miranda was a bit neutered in this film. By giving her more screen time, the movie loses that intimidation aspect of her character that the first movie did well. Without that edge to her character, she feels less cold and harder to read, which is partially what made her so intriguing in the first film. I also wasn’t a huge fan of the direction things went in the final act of the film in terms of the outcome of Runway. Everything they did with Emily during that, I didn’t think worked.
Overall, this movie was perfectly fine for what it is going for. I wouldn’t say I had a good time with it, but Sarah did, and she is more of the target audience. I think this is going to be a good movie for fans of the original.
Score: 6.5/10 Grade:6.5/10 Recommendation: Check it out if you liked the 1st film
Sarah’s score: 4/5 Fashion Shows (For perceptive, she gave the original movie 4.5/5 fashion shows)
