This weekend, The Fall Guy, a new action romance film staring Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt releases in theaters. The Fall Guy follows former stunt double, Colt Seavers as he must join the production of his ex-girlfriends movie when he hears that the actor he doubles for has gone missing. This was one of my most anticipated movies of the year. The trailers looked like a lot of fun and I really like both of the lead actors so was very excited for this film.
This movie was an absolute blast. I had so much fun with this movie and I think it is going to be a real crowd pleaser. This movie kept me entertaining from beginning to end as it is full of action, humor and fun characters. This movie is essentially a love letter to the stunt industry as well as movie making in general covering a lot of different stunt techniques and showcasing stunt workers as being really cool. I thought the tone in this movie was perfect. It goes all in with being silly and fun but doesn't cross the line into parody. It is funny but not so funny that it becomes stupid. It just has that tone that brings a broad appeal so just about any one will like this movie. The movie also has a lot of self aware humor, making fun of different movie tropes while simultaneously doing these same movie tropes. It makes fun of so many different aspects of movie making from scene styles, to cliched romances, to studio interference and the lack of stunt awards at the Oscars. I also thought the love story in this movie worked very well. Normally I am not in to romance plots but then one in this movie was just super effective that I was able to get on board with it. The soundtrack is also a lot of fun in this movie showcasing a lot of fun songs during the different action sequences. Another positive of the film is that it manages to juggle many different genres, action, mystery, romance and comedy, and blend them all together and still somehow make it work. One idea was never over powering the other with every element working seamlessly. Finally, the lead characters were great. Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt are both very talented and funny while also having great chemistry together.
I don't have many criticisms of the film. I felt that the big reveal at the end of the film was a bit predictable but beyond that this is just a super fun film.
Overall, this is a film that achieved exactly what it was going for. It is super fun while also being a love letter to movie making and the stunt community. It isn't going for any awards. It just wants have let the audience have a fun time at the movies and that is what is does.
Score: 8.5/10 Grade: A- Recommendation: This is a must see film.
