The Witcher Season 4

At the end of October, Season 4 of The Witcher released on Netflix. The Witcher tells the story of Geralt of Rivia, a solitary Witcher (Monster Hunter), as he struggles to find his place in the world. Season 4 picks up with him journeying across the continent to find his missing adoptive daughter, Ciri. I really dug the first 2 seasons of The Witcher as it delivered a new high fantasy world, and I thought season 3 was not great, but I hoped it was just a fluke, so I was pretty excited to see where season 4 was going to go.

I don't think I have ever been this disappointed in a TV season. This is the worst season of TV I have seen this year. The elephant in the room is, of course, Henry Cavill leaving the show and being replaced by Liam Hemsworth. However, that is not even a bad part of the season. Out of all the people to replace Henry Cavill, Liam Hemsworth is probably one of the best options. This season is the very definition of a filler season. Literally nothing happens the entire season. With Geralt's story, it starts with him journeying to find Ciri, and by the end of the season, he is no closer to finding him than when he started, except he now has some new friends. Yennefer's plot probably had the most going on, but it was still extremely dull. She spends multiple episodes just gathering people to her cause, and then has one lackluster battle with them all. Ciri's plot is also pretty bad. It is basically a season long version of the one bad episode of Stranger Things where Eleven joins a gang in the city. It doesn't do anything for Ciri's overall arc and, like Geralt, leaves her pretty much in the same place as when she started. The writing also made Geralt feel like a completely different character. He is a lot less gruff and more open with people around him, and doesn't feel anything like the Geralt at the end of the last season. Obviously, it is a different action, but you can't fault Liam Hemsworth as he just delivered what he was given. The whole season could have been done in probably 2-3 episodes, which shows how little is actually accomplished in it. There were also hardly any monsters, battles, or emotional stakes.

Overall, this was a very disappointing, dull season that adds nothing to the show. I can understand why Henry Cavill decided to leave if he saw the script for season 4.  Hopefully, the final season will be better, as I really do not want The Witcher to end on a sour note.

Score: 3/10 Grade: D Recommendation: Skip it
