For the second part of my music focus this month, I wanted to share my favorite movie songs. The criteria for these are that they are songs featured on the soundtrack or are included as a performance in the movie. I am not counting songs from musicals, as those should probably be a different list. I am not going to give a ton of thoughts on each song, but will instead embed the video and let the songs speak for themselves. So, in no particular order, here are my 10 favorite movie songs.
1. All Star - Shrek
All Star opens Shrek and is instantly linked to the film. The song sets the tone for Shrek’s world, capturing his quirks and daily routine.
2. Danger Zone - Top Gun
Danger Zone is the first song written by Kenny Loggins on this list. The song was made specifically for the movie Top Gun and was so cool that they used it three times. The song accompanies the opening title sequence, Maverick arriving at Top Gun, and a training sequence, making each of these scenes even cooler.
3. Don’t You (Forget About Me) - The Breakfast Club
Don't You (Forget About Me) was an iconic song from the 80s written specifically for the Breakfast Club. The song closes out the movie and is forever tied to Judd Nelson's fist pump. The song is a great fit for the ending as it is all about the characters not wanting to forget about the experiences they had from the day. The song is also heavily featured in the finale of Pitch Perfect, further cementing its status.
4. Footloose - Footloose
Footloose is the second Kenny Loggins song and was written specifically for the film Footloose. This is another song that is so cool that it is played multiple times in the film, including the opening and closing credits and the school dance at the end. The song is used as an anthem for the characters as they fight to express themselves through dance.
5. Ghostbusters - Ghostbusters
Ghostbusters is another iconic song from the 80s and was written specifically for Ghostbusters. The song features during the portion of the movie where the Ghostbusters get a ton of jobs and become increasingly popular with the public, and is featured in the closing credits. The song is a great embodiment of the characters and their mission in NYC.
6. Eye of the Tiger - Rocky III
Eye of the Tiger is an iconic pump-up song that was written specifically for Rocky III. The song is featured in the opening moments of the film during a montage of Rocky winning many fights, intercut with Clubber Lang training to beat Rocky as well as during his training montage with Apollo and the final fight. The song became such a hit that it would go on to be used in countless movies and TV shows.
7. Johnny B Goode - Back to the Future
Johnny B Goode is featured at the end of Back to the Future. While the song wasn't made for the movie, it is largely associated with it. With Marty finally getting his parents together, he is able to let loose and perform on his guitar. I like the song lets hi lean into what he was denied of at the beginning of the movie.
. Old Time Rock and Roll - Risky Business
While Old Time Rock and Roll wasn't written for Risky Business, the song will forever be associated with the movie. The song is used in the iconic dance scene where Tom Cruise's character is celebrating being home alone. This song is a chief reason for Tom Cruise's rise to stardom.
9. Time of My Life - Dirty Dancing
Time of My Life is the grand finale song from Dirty Dancing. The song accompanies the performance of Baby and Johnny and helps pay off all of the work and hardship they went through in the film. The song and dance have become so iconic that they are still used today in various media.
10. You’ve Got a Friend in Me - Toy Story
You've Got a Friend in Me is the opening song in Toy Story and helps showcase the joys of childhood. The song is featured while Andy is playing with Woody, and helps reinforce the bond the two characters have and how much Andy loves Woody.
