As the new year begins, I wanted to share a look ahead at the upcoming slate of movies and TV shows for the first third of the year. This covers January through April and highlights many of the releases that are on my radar.
January
Greenland: Migration: This is a new Gerard Butler disaster thriller that is apparently a sequel to the movie Greenland. It is about a family that must leave the safety of their bunker to find a new home. It probably won't be very good, but it won't be boring either. Greenland Migration will release on January 9th.
Primate: This is a new creature feature horror film about a group of friends who are attacked by their pet monkey after it gets infected. This is another probably bad movie, but we shall see how it goes. Primate will release on January 9th.
28 Years Later: The Bone Temple: This is the newest film in the 28 Days Later franchise. The movie is a sequel to the events of 28 Years Later and continues the story of the Spike and Ralph Fiennes characters. 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple will release on January 16th.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: This is a new Game of Thrones spinoff. It follows Ser Duncan the Tall and his squire, Egg, as they wander through Westeros during the Targaryen dynasty. I am interested in seeing a bit of a smaller-scale GOT show that doesn't involve fighting for the throne. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will release on HBO Max on January 18th.
Mercy: This is a futuristic detective thriller starring Chris Pratt. It follows a detective who has 90 minutes to prove his innocence as he stands trial for the murder of his wife. Again, I don't have high hopes for January movies, but this does look interesting. Mercy will release on January 23rd.
Wonder Man: This is the first Disney+ Marvel show to be released this year. It follows Hollywood actor, Simon Williams, as he gets thrown into the world of superheroes when he gains powers and becomes the superhero Wonder Man. I'm not super optimistic about this show as it has been sitting completed on the shelf for a while, but I remain hopeful. Wonder Man will release on Disney+ on January 27th.
Shelter: This is the yearly January Jason Statham action thriller. It follows a recluse on a remote Scottish island who must defend his home after rescuing a girl from the sea. This is the movie I am the most optimistic about, as these movies are usually a lot of fun. Shelter will release on January 30th.
Send Help: This is the newest film from Sam Raimi and follows two colleagues who are stranded on a deserted island and must overcome past issues to survive. In usual Sam Raimi fashion, this will have some horror and thriller elements to it. Send Help will release on January 30th.
February
The Strangers: Chapter 3: This is the newest film in the Strangers franchise. It concludes the story from the past three films and is described as a final showdown between the survivors and the masked strangers. I watched the first film, but did not see the second movie, so we will see if I get to this one or not. The Strangers: Chapter 3 will release on February 6th
Dracula: This is a new remake of the classic horror story. The movie looks to be an origin story for Dracula, as it is about a priest who becomes Dracula after denouncing God after the loss of his wife. Dracula will release on February 6th.
Wuthering Heights: This is a new period drama romance starring Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi. It explores the complicated love story between two characters living in the Yorkshire Moors. I read the book when I was in high school and did not like it, but this will probably be a big movie for fans of romance. Wuthering Heights will release on February 13th.
Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die: This is an end-of-the-world sci-fi comedy from the director of Pirates of the Caribbean. It follows a "man from the future" as he recruits people from a diner to help him save the world. This seems like my kind of goofy movie, and the trailers sold me on it. Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die will release on February 13th.
Scream 7: This is the newest film in the Scream franchise. It brings the story back to Sidney Prescott as the Ghostface killer targets her daughter. I have enjoyed the Scream franchise, but I am not a fan that they are moving this movie forward without Jenna Ortega and Melissa Barrera. Scream 7 will release on February 27th.
Monarch: Legacy of Monsters Season 2; This is the newest season in the Godzilla Monsterverse TV show. The season continues to tell the story of the monster-hunting organization Monarch, along with its origins. Monarch: Legacy of Monsters Season 2 will release on Apple TV on February 27th.
March
Daredevil: Born Again Season 2: This is the second season of the Daredevil revival show. The show continues the story of Matt Murdock as he dons the mantle of Daredevil to take down Kingpin and his reign as mayor. I really liked the first season and am very optimistic about the second season. Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 will release on Disney+ on March 4th.
Hoppers: Hoppers is the newest film from Pixar. The movie follows a 19-year-old animal lover who uses technology to place her consciousness into a robot beaver to uncover the mysteries of the animal world. That premise alone sounds very strange, but Pixar has my trust, so I think it will be good. Hoppers will release on March 6th.
The Bride: This is a new romantic horror film about the Frankenstein story. The Bride is about the creation of a companion for Frankenstein's Monster, known as The Bride. The movie stars Jessie Buckley as The Bride and Christian Bale as Frankenstein's Monster. The Bride will release on March 6th.
Project Hail Mary: This is a new Sci-Fi story based on a book from the author of The Martian. The movie stars Ryan Gosling as Ryland Grace, an astronaut, who is tasked to save the world alone in outer space. I have read this book and really liked it, and I am very excited for this movie. It is one of my most anticipated films of the year. Project Hail Mary will release on March 20th.
Ready or Not: Here I Come: This is the sequel to the horror film Ready or Not from 2019. The movie continues the story of Grace and her sister as they must outrun four rival families to compete for a powerful throne. I have not seen the first film yet, but I have liked the work these directors have done, so I think it will be worth watching. Ready or Not: Here I Come will release on March 27th.
April
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie: This is the newest film from Illumination. This movie is a sequel to The Super Mario Bros Movie and takes on concepts from the Super Mario Galaxy games. I had a lot of fun with the first film and love the Mario games, and am very excited to see how they bring in new aspects of the games. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie will release on April 3rd.
The Boys Season 5: This is the final season of one of my favorite modern TV shows. This season will close out the story of Huey, Annie, and the rest of the resistance as they take a final stand to take down Homelander and Vought. I am very excited for this season and am hoping for a big finale. The Boys Season 5 will release on Prime Video on April 9th.
Lee Cronin's The Mummy: This is another reboot of a classic monster film. The movie follows a family whose daughter returns after being missing for eight years, but with some horrifying differences. There is very little known about this movie. I am always interested in a good monster film. Lee Cronin's The Mummy will release on April 17th
Michael: This is the newest musical biopic from director Antoine Fuqua. Michael tells the story of Michael Jackson through his rise to fame and career highs and lows. This movie has been delayed multiple times, but I am interested to see how it turns out. It is also cool that the actor playing Michael Jackson is actually his nephew Jaafar Jackson. Michael will release on April 24th.
