For the third part of my music-focused posts this month, I wanted to share my 10 favorite film composers. As I have said before, film scores are my favorite type of music. After listening to enough film scores, you find some composers who have consistently good music. With all that said, here are my 10 favorite film composers.
10. John Powell
John Powell has composed numerous animation scores. Some of my favorites of his are Shrek, Kung Fu Panda, and How to Train Your Dragon. I particularly enjoy 'How to Train Your Dragon' for its flying and 'This is Berk' themes. He has also done a few live-action films that I have liked, such as Solo and Wicked.
9. Alan Menken
Alan Menken is another popular animated composer. He has done a lot of music for Disney animation and even wrote the songs for many of the Disney movies. Some of his best, in my opinion, are Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, and The Little Mermaid. He has also done several live-action movies for Disney, such as Enchanted and Newsies.
8. Randy Newman
Randy Newman is another composer who did a lot with Disney. He composed the music for a lot of the early Pixar films like Toy Story, A Bug's Life, Monsters Inc., and Cars, and also the Disney movie, The Princess and the Frog. Along with the scores, he also wrote and performed many of the songs on the soundtracks, such as You've Got a Friend in Me from Toy Story and The Time of Your Life from A Bug's Life.
7. James Horner
As we move away from animated movies, we get to James Horner. James Horner passed away in 2015, so it doesn't have a ton of modern movies, but he does have a ton of great scores from the 1980s and 1990s. Some of his big films were Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Willow, Braveheart, The Mask of Zorro, The Amazing Spider-Man, and 2016's The Magnificent Seven. He was also a frequent collaborator with James Cameron, making music for films such as Titanic, Aliens, and Avatar.
6. Howard Shore
Howard Shore is largely known for his composition of the scores for The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies. However, he also did the music for several other well-known films like Mrs. Doubtfire, The Silence of the Lambs, and Se7en. The Lord of the Rings is one of my favorite film scores, but since that is the only one of his I really listen to, he can't get much more than sixth.
5. Michael Giaccino
Michael Giaccino is more of a modern composer, having not started with film scores until 1997, but the number of great scores he has had in this short time is impressive. He has done multiple Pixar films in The Incredibles, Ratatouille, Up, Cars 2, Inside Out, Lightyear, and Coco. He also composed the entire Jurassic World trilogy, the modern Star Trek trilogy, multiple MCU films in Doctor Strange, The Spider-Man trilogy, Thor: Love and Thunder, and The Fantastic Four and has also made appearances in other franchise with Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Mission: Impossible 3 and 4, The Batman, and Zootopia. He also did the music for the TV show Lost.
4. Alan Silvestri
Alan Silvestri has been around for a while and has made his way through some iconic films. Some of his biggest scores were Back to the Future and The Avengers, but he has done so many other movies, such as Night at the Museum, Forrest Gump, Predator, Mission: Impossible, The Polar Express, all of the sequel Avengers films, including the two upcoming ones, and Captain America: The First Avenger. A lot of his films are extremely iconic and have stood the test of time.
3. Hans Zimmer
Hans Zimmer is a powerhouse involved in a lot of large-scale epic films. He did some of my favorite scores in the Pirates of the Caribbean films and The Lion King. He has done a ton of DC films with Man of Steel, Batman V Superman, Wonder Woman 1984, and The Dark Knight Trilogy. He has been a frequent collaborator with Christopher Nolan, using organ heavy music in films like Interstellar, Inception, and Dunkirk. Some of his other films include Gladiator, Sherlock Holmes, Dune, The Madagascar films, Top Gun: Maverick, and F1. He also collaborated with John Powell for the Kung Fu Panda music.
2. Danny Elfman
Danny Elfman has a very distinct style to his music, always feeling so eerie. He has done some of my all-time favorite scores with Batman, Batman Returns, and Beetlejuice. He has collaborated a lot with Tim Burton in films like Edward Scissorhands, Beetlejuice, Pee Wee's Big Adventure, Mars Attacks, Sleepy Hollow, Big Fish, and many others. He has also done the music for iconic films like the original Spider-Man trilogy, Men in Black, and The Nightmare Before Christmas.
1. John Williams
There was never going to be anyone at number one other than John Williams. John Williams is the greatest of all time writing many film scores that are regarded by many as the best scores of all time with hits like Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Harry Potter, Jaws, ET, Schindler's List, Jurassic Park, The Patriot, Catch Me If You Can, The Terminal, Home Alone, Superman, Close Encounters of the Third Kind and many of Steven Spielberg's films. There isn't someone out there who hasn't heard at least one of John Williams' themes. His music is so great that Steven Spielberg has re-edited some of his movies to fit the music.

Your recent movie music posts have been a lot of fun. It's interesting to hear more about the side of movies that we don't often think about but that really can make or break a movie.
