Gen V

This weekend, the finale of Gen V, a spin-off of Amazon's The Boys, was released on Amazon Prime Video. Gen V follows a group of young adult superheroes that enroll in Godolkin University, a college for people with Superpowers. The group soon discovers that the University is not what it seems and must put its powers to the test to uncover the truth. The Boys is one of my all-time favorite shows and I really enjoy the superhero genre. So naturally, I was very excited to see this show.

This show is easily one of the best shows I've seen this year. It takes the idea of superheroes that I know so well and centers it around a group of people my age. It has a lot of solid action with some very unique superpowers. I also found all of the characters to be very likable and relatable. This show manages to tackle many tough issues that young adults face such as mental health issues, parental expectations, eating disorders, and relationships, and portrays them in a very meaningful and effective way. You feel sympathetic for the characters as they are going through issues that every college-aged kid experiences. I also felt the season story was very cohesive. Each episode tells a very effective part of the story with no episodes feeling like in between filler episodes. The season also manages to give each character a solid arc and allows them to grow even if that growth is in a negative direction. I also like how the show is pretty separate from The Boys. There are some characters from The Boys but you could easily watch this show without having seen the other and still know what is going on. The spinoff also feels like it has a purpose as it shows a perspective in this world that we have not seen yet and actually adds to this world.

There isn't very much that I take issue with with. I felt that the jump for Kate and Sam's characters in the final two episodes was a bit rushed. It could have maybe used one more episode to ease this transition. Other than that, this is a solid show that I can't wait to see more of.

Overall, this is a very interesting show that gives a fresh perspective on a world we have seen 3 seasons of. I can't wait to see what they do next after the end of this season.
