This weekend, Heart of Stone, a new spy thriller starring Gal Gadot, released on Netflix. Heart of Stone follows an intelligence operative for a secret peacekeeping organization, Rachel Stone as she races to stop a hacker from stealing the agency's most valuable resource.
Heart of Stone is another attempt by Netflix at the big-budget spy action film. It definitely delivers some exciting big spectacle action sequences. It is never boring, as it always moves on to the next big action sequence. The movie also has a couple of side characters that are interesting and bring a fun energy.
However, those are about the only positives of them as this movie is just not very good. While it does have the big action sequences, the movie itself is pretty bland and forgettable. There are no standout action sequences nor really any big characters that are interesting. Gal Gadot's character has absolutely no charm in this movie as it feels like she is basically sleepwalking through the film to get an easy paycheck. The movie also has too many different ideas it is trying to get in. There is a plot line about an undercover agent working in MI6, there is a plot line where the hero and one of the villains get stranded in a desert together, and a plot line about the hero trying to retrieve the secret agent doodad. Any one of those ideas could have made for an interesting movie but together they all feel rushed and undeveloped. This movie is a prime example of the issues Netflix is having these days. They spend $200 million on a mediocre action movie and then complain about how they are losing billions of dollars a year. Netflix really needs to stick with midlevel films and not try to make expensive blockbuster like films.
In the end, this movie is just another failed attempt at a big action movie by Netflix. The movie is just filled with too many ideas, bland performances, and poor execution. It is just another very expensive bland action spy movie.
