This weekend, Lisa Frankenstein, a new comedy-horror romance film released in theaters. Lisa Frankenstein follows an outsider, Lisa Swallows when a freak accident brings back a corpse from a cemetery where she likes to spend her time. The two soon develop a relationship that leads to more than anyone is expecting. This movie has been on my radar since I saw the trailer. It looked really weird and was also directed by Zelda Williams, the daughter of the late Robin Williams so I was interested to see how it would turn out.
This is probably the most unique movie I've seen this year. Style-wise, it is very different with a lot of unique visuals showcasing various aspects of the romance in the story. This movie essentially brings a Tim Burton feeling to the high school romance genre which I think was a great choice for an oversaturated genre of movies. The best part about this movie was the romance and all the weird aspects attached to it. The movie does a great job of having these two characters go from being friends to full lovers by the end of the story. There is also a pretty fun fish-out-of-water aspect to the story as the creature is from the 1800s and is experiencing all of this 1980s technology. It just adds another level that I think works rather well. The two leads also deliver great performances. Kathryn Newton is great at playing both a shy reclusive teenager and a confident teenager. She plays both extremes of the spectrum really well. Cole Sprouse is also great as The Creature. He manages to portray a lot of emotion and personality while not having any lines. It is also fun to see him in something so different than The Suite Life of Zach and Cody.
However, this movie is not going to be for everyone. This movie feels a lot like a Tim Burton film. A lot of people find his films weird and off-putting and this one will be similar to that. It is just so weird that it is not going to work for a lot of people. I was fine with it for the most part but there were some points that I just thought were too weird. I also thought that Lisa's character change was a bit abrupt. Her personality transformation is very sudden and I think makes the movie a bit choppy. There are also a few holes in the logic of who the movie tries to set up as an antagonist and the direction of the story goes by the end of the movie.
Overall, while it was very unique and had some good romance moments, I still found this movie very weird and a bit off-putting at times. This is the kind of movie where the trailer is your guide. If the trailer looks too weird, then you will probably not like this movie. If the trailer looks fun, you'll probably like it.
Score: 6.5/10 Grade: B- Recommendation: Let the trailer be your guide.
