Nobody 2, the sequel to the 2021 Bob Odenkirk action film, recently hit theaters. This time, Hutch and his family go on vacation, but trouble finds them when Hutch crosses paths with a local cartel boss. I enjoyed the first film’s grounded, everyman action, so I was curious to see if the sequel would deliver more of the same.

My feelings about this film were mixed. On the surface, it is very entertaining, shifting from the action film with comedic moments of the first to a full-blown action comedy. As a result, there are plenty of funny moments and over-the-top action sequences. The movie utilizes many needle drops, which enhance the enjoyment of these scenes. I also appreciated that Hutch's wife gets some good moments, even if they were telegraphed early on. Overall, Nobody 2 feels harmless—a family vacation movie turned action comedy, and it succeeds on all those fronts.

The biggest issue I had with the film is that it strays too far from the essence of the original film. I think it goes too goofy at times and forgets why the first film stood out so much. It reminds me of what happened to M3GAN 2.0, going from a small horror film to a Sci-Fi spy film. Nobody 2 also has some relationship issues between Hutch and his family that never really get resolved. The movie also pretty much runs beat for beat with the plot of the original film. You can feel it going through every element like a checklist.

Overall, this is a fun enough film that works on a top level, but it does kind of lose the essence of what made the original film good.

Score: 6.5/10 Grade: B- Recommendation: Wait to stream it
