With August at an end, we are now two-thirds of the way through the year, so it is time to share my thoughts and ranking of the five new August releases that I saw. There weren't any big movies released this month. The biggest film was probably Freakier Friday, and that is still for a specific audience. Regardless, I got to see some movies and genres that I don't normally see, which was still a pleasant experience. With all of that said, here are my thoughts and ranking of the 5 August new releases that I saw.

5. Honey Don't

Honey Don't is easily the worst movie I saw this month. Honey Don't follows a private investigator who decides to look into the death of a car crash victim. I was hoping for a bit of a detective mystery type story, and while there was some of that, it didn't end up being the movie I was expecting. I just don't think the movie was structured very well. The whole first 2/3rds of the movie is about Honey investigating this car crash death, with the final act moving to something completely different, with the two only very loosely related by one line of dialogue at the end. I also thought the whole Chris Evans aspect was unnecessary. The idea of a manipulative pastor as a suspect was interesting, but the way it was done, you could pull him out of the movie, and it wouldn't make any difference. I also didn't find any of the characters all that likable. Overall, this movie was a big miss for me, and after seeing a couple of these Ethan Coen solo films, I don't think he is great at directing without his brother.

Score: 4/10 Grade: D+

4. Nobody 2

There is a big jump between Honey Don't and Nobody 2. Superficially, Nobody 2 is a lot of fun. It bumps up the comedy aspects of the first film to make the movie more of an action comedy instead of an action movie with comedic undertones. The action sequences are all a lot of fun, and we get to see Hutch's wife get some good moments in this one. The biggest issue with this film is that it goes a bit too far in the comedy aspect, losing a bit of the essence of the original film. I liked it more as a grounded everyman action film instead of this over-the-top action comedy. The movie also seems to have competing concepts. It tries to be a family vacation story while also trying to check off all of the plot beats of the original film, and the two just don't fit together naturally. The movie has Hutch's brother show up for the climax of this movie for no reason at all other than because he was in the climax of the first movie. The movie also has some relationship issues with Hutch and his family that get touched on briefly but are never fully resolved. In the end, while I did have fun with this movie and would probably rewatch it, from a cohesion and quality standpoint, it has some issues.

Score: 6.5/10 Grade: B-

3. Freakier Friday

Freakier Friday was Sarah's favorite movie this month; granted, it was the only movie she saw this month. Typically, long-delayed sequels like this don't have the best track record, but this one was actually kind of good. It was fun to see Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan together on screen again. They both have great chemistry together and get to play off each other more than they did in the previous movie. The movie also did a great job with its generational humor, having things that were relevant to younger audiences while also keeping jokes that aged with the audience from the first film. I think this movie was quite a bit funnier than the original film. The movie also did good with its call-backs to the original film by having enough to satisfy fans but not so much that it overshadowed new aspects of the film. The big thing keeping the score down is that the original characters, Tess and Anna, were a bit sidelined, with most of the focus being on the two daughters in the adult bodies. I wish they had included Anna and Tess a little more in the story. Overall, I thought this was a solid follow-up to the original film.

Score: 7.5/10 Grade: B

2. Weapons

Weapons is a new horror film from the director of Barbarian. It tells the story of a small town where all but one child in a class goes missing one night. This is a great modern horror film. I like how the film is structured in nonlinear chapters, giving different POVs of the same events. They reveal things that were omitted from the previous chapters while still drawing new mysteries by the end. The movie does a great job of building each chapter up so that by the end, you have a complete picture of how the events went down. The movie does a great job of using horror to tackle ideas of isolation and survivor's guilt. I also like how the movie contains splashes of humor. However, the humor is done in a way that fits naturally with the tone of the story so as not to cut the tension. The movie brings in all types of horror aspects with some body horror, some slasher horror, and a lot of psychological horror. All of them combined are truly effective at telling the story. The only thing keeping this out of the top spot is that you have to suspend some disbelief with what the town does and doesn’t figure out, but even that is not a big issue. In the end, this is a great modern horror film that proves that horror movies are on the rise.

Score: 8/10 Grade: B+

1. The Naked Gun

The Naked Gun is probably the funniest movie I've seen this year. The movie perfectly captures the essence of the original trilogy while not overdoing it with callbacks and references. This type of humor is right up my alley with the witty, stupid jokes. Liam Neeson is perfect in this movie as a replacement for Leslie Neilson with his deadpan humor. He is able to play it straight with the most ridiculous things so well. All of the jokes in this movie are so hilarious. There are so many of them, and 90% of them land. There are times when a joke is missed as you are still laughing from the previous joke. The recurring jokes are so funny in this movie, with each time they come up, the joke gets funnier. The movie also manages to age with the times. It makes new jokes while still keeping the essence of the original film. Some movies try to keep up with the times and lose the humor, but this film is just as funny as the original. I also like how fast the movie goes. It clocks in at under 90 minutes but doesn't feel rushed, nor is there any lull with the jokes. Overall, this is a hilarious movie, and it is great to see a comeback of classic comedies.

Score: 8/10 Grade: B+
