I am a little late to the party, but I finally watched Scream 7 this week. Scream 7 continues the story of Sidney Prescott as a new Ghostface killer invades her new life and town to attack her family. This movie has had a rocky production, to say the least. First, it lost Melissa Barrera when she was fired for making some politically charged comments. Then Jenna Ortega left the project due to scheduling issues. Finally, the directors of the previous two films decided not to return. All of this forced the studio to pivot the movie in a completely different direction, bringing Sidney back to the forefront. Due to all of this, I was quite skeptical of this film.
Unfortunately, this movie was not very good. Right from the get-go, you can tell that this version of the movie was nobody's first choice. It wasn't plan A or even plan B, but more of a plan C. The movie does still have some positive aspects to it. There is a certain degree of charm to these Scream movies, and this one is no exception. It is fun to see Sidney back in the franchise in a new phase of life with a daughter. Having Sidney learn how to parent her teenage daughter while also coping with her past is an interesting idea. However, from a plot and logic level, Scream 7 is seriously lacking. For half the movie, you are sitting and wondering where the police are during all of these, as there are several sequences right in the middle of town where the police are nowhere to be seen. The movie also brings in a few characters in the middle act of the film, and then they are just randomly absent from the third act of the film. Scream 7 also fails to effectively pay off the relationship between Sidney and her daughter. The movie doesn't really give time for the relationship to improve; it just kind of is a problem until it isn't. Finally, the motivation and logic of the revealed killer is complete nonsense. The killer dumps a bunch of exposition and motivation, but it is completely incoherent. The killer is saying normal words, but they aren't coming together to be anything that makes any sense.
Overall, I found this movie to be very disappointing with its lack of logic and absolute nonsense with the killer, though, considering the rocky production, I am not surprised.
Score: 5.5/10 Grade: C Recommendation: Wait to stream it.
