With February at an end, it is time to share my thoughts and ranking on the new releases that I saw. I managed to see four movies this month. February was already a lighter month, but I also missed a couple due to too many being released on Valentine's Day Weekend (Cold Storage) and going on vacation (Scream VII). I also sat out on Wuthering Heights as that did not interest Sarah or me. Most of the movies were pretty good, but I am bummed that I missed Scream VII and hope to see it soon. This month was also full of smaller scale movies with none of the films I saw being from the major studios.
4. Dracula

Dracula is probably the only movie I saw this month that I didn't really care for. On the positive side, I do like how it turns Dracula's story into a bit of a tragedy. In this version, he isn't entirely the monster he is made out to be. The movie also features a decent performance from Christoph Waltz. However, the movie lacks any sort of distinct style or flair. It lacks any sort of gothic style like other Dracula films have, nor does it have an impressive set design like the most recent Frankenstein. The plot is also pretty clunky, with the main storyline not kicking in until an hour into the film. The story also isn't really clear who the focus is on and who the villain is, as it jumps between Dracula and Christoph Waltz. I also thought that the ending raised more questions than it answered with the decision Dracula ultimately makes. Overall, while there were some positive elements, I thought this was a pretty bland version of the Dracula story.
Score: 6/10 Grade: C+
3. How to Make a Killing

This is the last film I saw this month and is one of the many surprisingly fun films I saw this month. This movie had a very interesting premise and manages to tell it without feeling repetitive or predictable. Glen Powell is a lot of fun in the lead role as he portrays a character that is just so likeable even though he is killing people. You want him to succeed because the movie gets you on board with his backstory. The movie also movies at a pretty brisk pace leaving no opportunity to feel slow or drag. I was concerned that the movie would feel clunky or episodic but it actually has a very smooth flow to it as each killing flows right into a new aspect of Becket’s life which then leads into the next killing. I also liked how the movie takes the finale in an unexpected direction. You always know he is going to get caught but the film does something unique with it. I did feel that it did rush a bit in the middle of the film to get to the big finale but other than that I really have no complaints with this movie. In the end, this was a fun dark comedy with a smooth story and a likeable lead.
Score:8/10 Grade: B+
2. Crime 101

Crime 101 is a very cool crime thriller with a stacked cast. The movie does a great job of interweaving the story of the three main characters until it all comes together at the end of the movie. Chris Hemsworth is great as this very calm and precise man who commits heists, though it is weird to hear him with an American accent. I also thought Halle Berry's character's story was very well done as she goes through this career crisis and momentarily goes down a dark path. I also like the foil that is created between Chris Hemsworth and Barry Keoghan, as one is very calm and collected, and the other is chaotic and violent, as they both go for the same job. There were some solid action sequences, like the car chase with the bike, and I thought the movie did a good job of maintaining tension through the entire runtime. The only thing holding it back is that it does get a bit slow in the middle part of the film and doesn't have as many thrills or action as I was expecting. In the end, this was a very cool crime movie with great characters and an interesting story intertwining them.
Score: 8/10 Grade: B+
1. Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die

Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die was a bit of an unexpected surprise for me. Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die is about a man who travels back in time to assemble a team of random restaurant patrons to stop AI from taking over the world. This movie was a lot of fun. It is one part time travel sci-fi, one part comedy and also has a little horror sprinkled in. It has a lot of funny moments and just goes absolutely bananas in the third act. Sam Rockwell is great as this man that you can't tell if he is crazy or not. The movie does a great job of revealing information through flashbacks so that by the end of the movie, everything comes together and pays off. It reminds me a lot of Weapons, where each flashback answers some questions but also presents new ones, which get answered by the end of the movie. I like how the movie doesn't take things too seriously but also doesn't go full-on campy either. Overall, this was a very fun movie that made me laugh but also had a solid story.
