This Thursday, the final episode of Creature Commandos released on Max. Creature Commandos is an animated TV show in the DC universe and follows a non-human team assembled by Amanda Waller who are sent on a mission to protect a princess. The team includes Rick Flagg Sr, The Bride of Frankenstein, Weasel, Dr. Phosphorus, Nina, and G.I Robot. This is the first property in the newly created DCU being run by James Gunn and Peter Safran so I was interested to see how this new universe was going to start.

I had a good amount of fun with this show. I liked the James Gun style and tone that he puts into all of his projects. It has a lot of dark humor in it while also not having the show take itself too seriously. The action style is also a bit of a James Gunn signature. The action sequences are all quite vibrant while having a high-energy rock song playing behind them. It makes for all the sequences to be a lot of fun. The violence reminds me a lot of Rick and Morty where it gets pretty gory for an animated show but still feels slightly cartoonish. I also like that this show decided to focus on lesser-known characters. We got to learn a lot about the team members in this show and see them become more of a family. I thought the individual episode arcs were well done. Each character got to be the focus of their own episode with each of their backstories being showcased. I liked how these episodes humanized the characters and helped explain why they are the way they are.

One of the drawbacks of the show was the whole Frankenstein subplot. I felt that his story didn't go anywhere or add much of anything to the overall story. He is just running around in the background and just gets pushed aside in the final episode. I also felt that the episodes were a bit too short. Every time the episode would start to get going, it would end. I think that longer episodes would have helped expand the overall season story. Finally, I felt that the show was more interested in telling the backstory of these characters than it was in the whole princess plot line. The whole season arc could have easily been fit into a single episode. I think the show should have fleshed out the season-long story a bit more or have it just be the first episode, and have the show have a different mission every week.

Overall, while this was a fun and entertaining show, I felt that the overall season story was a bit lacking, the individual parts of the show were better than the whole.

Score: 7.5/10 Grade: B Recommendation: Check it out

In this post and others, you talk about if a show/movie "takes itself too seriously" or not. Can you explain what you mean by that? I think I know but want to check to be sure. Thanks.
