Last weekend, the season 4 finale of The Boys was released on Amazon Prime Video. This season continues the mission of The Boys to take down Homelander once and for all. The Boys is one of my all-time favorite shows so of course I was extremely excited to watch another season.
This season is definitely the weakest of the 4 seasons of this show but when all of the seasons are 10/10 being the weakest is still pretty good. Just like with the other seasons, season 4 delivers all sorts of gory action sequences and wildly entertaining moments. It also continues to deliver plenty of funny moments and parodies of current events and culture. We get a lot of making fun of the MCU, the current political climate, large corporate companies and so much more. What differs this season from the others is that it is a lot more character-driven. Each episode really allows us to dive deep into the different characters. We get subplots such as Hughie and his relationship with his parents, Annie's insecurities, and Frenchie's past. Because it is more character-driven, we get to see more of each character's struggles and see them grow and change like real people. Even though it may feel a bit unfocused at times, the different subplots manage to tie together in the final episode and really pay things off which in turn helps further the story quite a bit. I also like that we get to go a bit deeper into Homelander and his past and see how unhinged he actually is and why he is that way. Finally, I like how to get some fun new additions with some new Supes. We are introduced to Firecracker, Sage, Technight, and others that just make for solid additions to the story.
What holds this season back from the others for me is that some of the political commentary is a bit too on the nose. The climax literally takes place on January 6th when the electoral college votes are counted with protests going on. At a certain point, they just overtly reference things instead of just parodying them.
Overall, this is another fantastic season of The Boys and while it gets a little heavy-handed with the politics, the highs of this season are just so high that it pretty much overshadows the minor issues.
Score: 9.5/10 Grade: A+ Recommendation: This is a must-see show
