This weekend, Flight Risk, a new Mark Wahlberg thriller, was released in theaters. Flight Risk follows a US Marshall as she attempts to transport a witness in a major case on a charter plane. The trailers had me interested but I didn’t have super high hopes as this is a January (Dumpuary) release.
I had some mixed feelings about this movie. There are several aspects that it did well. The thriller aspect was very effective as you are always on edge waiting to see if the agent can land the plan. I also thought the overall premise was interesting and that the majority of the film takes place inside a small charter plane. The movie doesn’t overstay its welcome it clocks in at about 90 minutes which is a great length for a movie like this. I also thought Mark Wahlberg gave a good performance as this crazy killer. I think Marky Mark’s unsettling performance is the main draw of the movie. I think all this movie was going for was to be a mid tier B thriller and to a certain extent, it pulls that off.
However, there was also quite a bit that did not work for me. I found the Topher Grace character to be quite annoying. He keeps trying to bring comic relief and it just does not fit in a movie like this. The aspect the movie is marketed on kind of falls through in the first 30 minutes. There is no reason for the Mark Wahlberg character to be kept alive in the plane yet he remains there to give more thrills to the movie. I’m not sure this was really a movie theater-level movie. If it was direct to streaming, I think it would be a lot better received as a B
Overall, this a thrilling enough film, that will keep you entertained as a streaming film, but is not worth the time or money to see it in the theater.
Score: 6/10 Grade: C+ Recommendation: Wait to stream it
