This weekend, Kraven the Hunter, Sony's newest Spider-Man universe film, was released in theaters. The Film follows Kraven as he rescues his brother from a criminal organization. None of the other Spider-Man villain films have been very good, so I wasn’t expecting much from this film either, but I still hoped it would be some dumb fun like Venom.
To get right to it, this movie is bad. It isn’t quite Madam Web but it is still terrible. The writing here is just atrocious. I don’t know why the writers thought that any normal human being would talk like the characters in this movie do. However, while the writing is bad, the delivery of the dialogue makes it even worse. The movie has two Oscar-nominated actors and even they couldn't do anything to help this movie. The logic is also completely nonsensical. Several elements of the plot make no sense and choices of various characters are devoid of any sort of common sense. The movie is also tonally all over the place. It will go from serious graphic violence to super campy jokes in five minutes. The movie also forgoes any sort of cohesive ending and instead opts to spend the final ten minutes setting up a sequel that is never going to happen. Several characters had no purpose in the movie and were just there taking up screen time such as Calypso. This movie is almost in a so bad it's good situation. I do not understand how Sony makes the same mistakes with these villain movies over and over again. It has just been one terrible movie after another and I don’t understand how these movies show no signs of improvement and are just seemingly getting worse. I also do not understand how Sony can go from Across the Spider-Verse to Madam Web and Kraven the Hunter in one year.
Overall, this is a terrible movie with the only positive being that this hopefully marks the end of the bad Spider-Man villain movies.
Grade: D+ Score: 4/10 Recommendation: Skip it.
