Last weekend, Meg 2: The Trench was released in theaters. Meg 2 follows Jonas Taylor (Jason Statham) and his team of underwater explorers as they explore the unknown depths of the oceans. When a malevolent mining operation is discovered, the team must race back to the surface to stop a new underwater threat.

This movie delivered exactly what I expected being about Jason Statham fighting a giant shark. It is very entertaining, especially in the second half, and has quite a few funny moments. I found this film a significant step up from the original film. It had a much more connected story instead of feeling like multiple events held together by a weak plot. This movie also manages to find the right tone for this kind of movie. The first movie takes itself way too seriously acting like it is this big action movie and not a stupid shark movie. This movie manages to settle on a much goofier tone that matches the ridiculous story they are trying to tell. This movie felt a bit like a mix between Jaws and Jurassic World. It has several moments that are a lot like Jaws but then you also get Jason Statham on a Jet Ski fighting 3 sharks. This is a prime example of a Junk food movie. It is not high-quality cinema and can be just nitpicked to death but it is a very fun time and really entertaining.

As I said before this is not high quality cinema. Nobody goes to see these types of movies for the plot and characters. As is usual for these types of movies, the characters are pretty forgettable and are just there as shark food and the plot is pretty thin, weakly holding the story together. While the second half manages to find the right tone for this kind of movie, the first half still takes itself way too seriously. Once we get to the island, the tone lightens up significantly, and is much more fun.

Overall, I had a good bit of fun with this movie. It is by no means a good film, but it is very entertaining.

I don't come to see a story but instead to see Jason Statham on a Jet Ski fighting three sharks.

Score: 6/10 Grade: C+ Recommendation: Watch this if you like dumb shark movies
