This weekend, Twisters, the sequel to the 90's disaster film Twister, releases in theaters. Twisters follows former storm chaser, Kate, as she returns to Oklahoma to help a team with new technologies map the inner workings of a tornado. I have seen the original film several times and enjoyed it well enough so I was interested to see how this one would go.
This movie was a very pleasant surprise. I was expecting a ridiculous movie with a bunch of storm-chaser nonsense and much like the first film, would be fun but not very good. Instead, this movie ends up being a pretty solid film that is more than just the typical nonsense disaster film. I found this film to be better than the original film in every way. The characters and story are better and the inner conflicts and motivations are stronger. In general, this is an extremely entertaining and very crowd-pleasing movie. All of the characters are super likable. Daisy Edgar-Jones, Glen Powel, and Anthony Ramos are all great together in this film with each one bringing a fun and interesting character to the story. Glen Powel has been on a hot streak and this movie just continues that as he continues to showcase his effortless charm. This movie also does a great job of making elements that sound incredibly stupid such as Glen Power calling himself "The Tornado Wrangler" and actually makes it work. I also thought that this movie managed to deliver a lot of solid emotional moments. Throughout the story, we follow Kate and her journey as she copes with losing her friends to a tornado. The movie does a great job of showing the effects of this on her. Along with emotional moments and a compelling story, the movie also delivers a lot of tornado action. There is never a dull moment in the story as there is also some fun tornado sequence going on. Finally, the movie does a great job of bringing moments of payoff and solid character arcs to the end of the story. Everyone gets their own little moment, even the British reporter who tags along.
I don't have many huge issues with this movie. Of course, you have to suspend a bit of disbelief as some of the stuff the tornado chasers do and the whole idea of dissipating a tornado is just nonsense but beyond that, this is just a solid summer blockbuster.
Overall, this movie is a great crowd-pleaser and a lot of fun to watch. It takes the nonsense and somehow makes it work so that the movie isn't super goofy and also delivers some solid emotional moments.
Score: 8.5/10 Grade: A Recommendation: Check this film out.
