Last weekend, Greenland 2: Migration, the newest Gerard Butler disaster movie, released in theaters. Greenland 2 continues the story of John Garrity and his family as they are forced from the safety of their bunker and must navigate the wastelands of the world to find a new home. I watched the first film the day before I watched this one. It's a typical disaster movie, and I didn't have high expectations for the sequel.
As with the first film, Greenland 2 is your typical barely passable disaster movie. It contains elements of mass destruction, with random weather events occurring, and characters being killed off for no apparent reason. It is pretty by numbers and nothing special. Like most disaster movies, it maintains a high level of suspense that keeps you engaged until the end. This one had less of that than the first one, but still some elements of excitement. Gerard Butler is Gerard Butler. He is perfectly fine in movies like this. You are required to have some suspension of disbelief with his character as he goes from being a structural engineer in the first film to being an expert plumber, boat engine mechanic, and sharpshooter in this film. The storytelling is also pretty clunky as the family moves from one place to the next, staying with a random character for the night and then moving on. The movie also decides to introduce this random daughter character in the last 20 minutes of the movie for no reason at all, as she serves no purpose for the rest of the movie. Her father is basically like, "Hey, guy I met 5 seconds ago, please take my daughter with you to your new home". It doesn't make any sense. The movie also decides to ignore the son's diabetes in this film even though it was a whole thing in the previous movie and the reason they originally weren't allowed in the bunker.
Overall, this is a pretty bland and mediocre disaster film. It doesn't do anything extremely bad, but also doesn't have that stupid fun aspect that you feel with other disaster films like this. It is just Gerard Butler doing Gerard Butler things for 90 minutes.
Score: 5/10 Grade: C Recommendation: Skip it
